B.4 · The river streets

Curtains, shutters and blinds in Lorn and Morpeth

The verandah-era streets by the river carry the best windows in the district: tall, deep-framed, and older than anything sold off a size chart. Dressing them well is mostly a matter of respect. Measure the joinery as it actually is, and let the proportions lead.

B.4a The period job

Made to the frame, not to the average.

A hundred-year-old sash window has settled with its house. The reveal tapers, the head is off level by a few millimetres, and a stock-size covering announces every one of those honest flaws. Made-to-measure hides them again: shutter panels scribed to the opening, curtains cut to the true drop of each window rather than a shared number.

We also fix with care. Old timber and lime plaster do not forgive casual drilling, so brackets go where the frame can take them.

B.4b Field notes

STOCKLorn is a small pocket of verandah-era houses; Morpeth mixes its cottages with a real share of units and rooms above the old shopfronts.
WINDOWSTall drops, narrow widths, deep timber reveals. Floor-length curtains and scribed shutter panels suit them; short blinds chop the proportions.
LIGHTLow river-flat ground and wide verandahs keep summer sun off most glass; the job here is usually privacy, warmth and finish rather than heat.
USUAL ROWSFull-height curtains in the front rooms, timber or timber-look shutters street-side, discreet blockout rollers behind lace where the bedroom needs true dark.

Morpeth's other windows.

Above the shopfronts and along the lanes, Morpeth keeps a quiet stock of units and flats, and they get the same visit: usually a handful of openings where daytime privacy from the street below matters most. Sheers and light-filter rollers carry those rooms; the measure sorts access and fixings on the day.

The curtain range and the shutter range carry most of this page's work.

Nearby Bolwarra, Largs and the river end of East Maitland share these streets' era and get the same treatment. All areas.
